Nursery Commission
The nursery commission I’ve been working on is finished and installed in its new home!
This was my largest commission to date, consisting of 18 paintings including three of the biggest paintings I'd done yet (12” by 36”).
I was asked to create a wall of artwork in similar style and subject matter as my landscapes and animal paintings. They wanted the paintings to cover a large area of a nursery wall, be gender neutral, and painted on wood panels for a clean natural look. Originally we discussed doing a mural but decide that a gallery wall would be better suited for what they wanted and would be able to go with them if they moved.
It felt good to stretch myself trying new mediums and techniques to achieve the desired look (I had just begun to test out watercolor ground on wood panel when I took on this project). This was a dream commission not only because it presented a new challenge but I was also in the sweet spot of receiving clear guidelines and lots of creative freedom from my client.
It took me almost 6 months of experimenting, testing, planning, and painting to complete.
I created these paintings in mixed media on wood panels using just a few mediums including watercolor, watercolor ground, pencils, and acrylic.
I wanted to create a dreamy and playful aesthetic grounded in the natural environment that could be found just outside the nursery doors.
I incorporated soft pastels into the background of the mostly neutral colored subjects, taking inspiration for pastels from the dusk toned landscape that was the focal point of the gallery wall.
The plants, animals, and insects found in the collection all depict local flora and fauna of North Georgia.
